Surf’s Up!

News readers won’t believe this; I can hardly believe it myself!
Having postponed our traditional August trip to Adelaide in favour of a trip in September to check out a Spectrum gig on the 18th at Adelaide’s famous Rob Roy Hotel, I was given the contact number of one David Minear.
When he called back, it turns out he is the David Minear with whom I went to college; same year, and a fellow member of the gymnastics team!!
I haven’t seen him for about 39 years and he has moved, after a long career in advertising, to ….. managing a record label! Surf music to be precise, at <<www.bombora.net.au>>.
To cut a long story short, he tells me the Spectrum gig is for industry insiders to contribute to Support Act, a fund for struggling Australian musos, and it’s not a public concert. Needless to say the “old boy network” went into overdrive and, and me and a group of friends, will be acting as “music consultants” so we can enjoy the casual Pizza and Spectrum “No Anchovies” show in September.
Not only does David know Mike Rudd well, he is a mate of Tim Gaze, arguably the best guitarist Oz has produced. Mike and Tim were in Ariel together and Tim wrote their hit “Jamaican Farewell”. So through Bombora I’ve obtained a couple of Tim’s cds and some surf music compilations. This is in addition to the long-awaited (Ross Wilson Supergroup) Mighty Kong’s “All I Wanna Do Is Rock!” cd from Aztec Music.
To coin a phrase – “It’s all happening!”
I’m now looking forward to the September trip and I’ll keep you posted on further developments.

Rock On!
