Unfortunately Zappa regarded cigarettes as "food" and no doubt used them to support his punishing work schedule. I guess he wasn't planning to get prostate cancer and die prematurely. Even so he left a body of work most artists would take three lifetimes to achieve.

Thanks for the comment Jon - it would be interesting to find an old TAB chart for the lute and display it for our readers - must look into that! You certainly make a very good point about the massive benefits of TAB once you can read traditional music notation. In other words, you get the best result if you learn both.

I appreciate the trackback. I am going to check your site out. I hope to develop a relationship with you and share articles on Stumble.
I don't think guitarists take very good care of themselves. Look at Zappa. He probably didn't have to die. Danny

True, but you at the same time there are things that you can illustrate with TAB that traditional musical notation simply can't convey. TAB has been around in one form or another since the Renaissance period (I think it was used for Lute?), today's TAB is much more precise than that obviously but it means that with the traditional stave you can also show various Guitar effects, bends being the obvious example. I think you do need to be able to read music to fully appreciate TAB but the benefits of TAB are massive.

I like Vai and Satriani too, but I think Frank led the way. Vai transposed some of Zappa's music and also played in one of the many combinations of his band. If my local cd shops are any guide, Zappa is still popular as many of his cds are stocked. His Australian concerts rate up there with the best I've seen!

I may not be into this style of music, but Zappa never managed to get me started, to be honest sounded a bit too much for me. I like more Vai or Satriani than Zappa
