Amazing Guitar Secrets
Feb 6th, 2008 by guitarnews
Amazing Guitar Secrets was developed by Dan Denley, who although an experienced, highly educated guitar professional, seems to have a unique ability to remember what it was like to be a rank beginner.
His guitar learning course has been cleverly created to demonstrate certain lesson concepts using parts of famous songs to inspire students. This strategy is a great help in pushing through the initial frustration and awkwardness many students encounter when learning to play the guitar.
Program Overview
1. A Members Website offering internet access to 10 course books, video tutorials and audio tracks. The video lessons are also contained on DVDs which are sent by Mail. Cost is $47
2. For an additional $50, students can access a Gold Program which contains the entire course in physical form. The course material comprises 2 DVDs, 1 CD and the collection of 10 course books all assembled into one convenient coil bound book. Cost for the Gold Program is $97
The Amazing Guitar Secrets lessons program utilises video, audio and written instructions to deliver a course which is well organized, thorough, and an enjoyable method of learning to play the guitar. The course aims to teach the student how to progress past the basic guitar skills and music theory and get into the real fun of learning to solo, improvise and write songs.
Who Benefits
Beginners often start out with little or no understanding of how to hold a guitar or of how music theory operates in soloing, improvising or writing songs. This is where Dan Denley shines. He has a knack of being able to put himself back into the shoes of a beginner and demonstrate clearly in a way that students can instantly understand and learn.
Intermediate guitar players are often inconsistent with their skills and have gaps in their knowledge of musical building blocks. This can often lead to being stuck in a rut with no apparent way forward. The thoroughness of Denley’s course can be a great help to those with plenty of experience but who want to become a much more complete player.
Advanced guitar players will benefit the least from this course. Having usually conquered and frequently performed most of the concepts and techniques in this book, advanced guitarists might possibly find nothing new here. However, even the most advanced can become rusty and forget some of their previously learned tricks. Amazing Guitar Secrets can still be a good resource for refreshing some of those skills.
What We Liked
Dan Denley’s course construction has been cleverly created to demonstrate certain lesson concepts using parts of famous songs to inspire students. This is particularly helpful to beginners.
The option of paying extra for the complete physical course with the pre-printed and bound lesson supplement books is really well worth the money. This can free you to practice when access to a computer or TV is not possible. Even while viewing the DVDs by computer or TV using the printed pages in conjunction with the video lessons really works well. You could not use this method of practicing if only the Website Version is purchased.
The Down Side
While the videos are generally well produced with good lighting, the sound is sometimes out of balance, and the guitar volume is difficult to hear. Using a good quality headphone set can overcome this problem. The videos could also be improved by including more close up shots of the right and left hands. Watching the DVD lessons on a TV can bring out more of these details.
The Amazing Guitar Secrets program contains well over a year’s worth of lessons that might easily cost $1000 or more from a hands-on guitar teacher, so the $47 to $97 one time cost is very good value. This guitar course is definitely one of the best we have encountered so far.
